The CAP St. Joe Head Start program seeks to improve the lives of low-income children by providing quality comprehensive early childhood education services that are family-focused, including education, health, nutrition and mental health.
Improving the lives of children is accomplished by involving parents in the total operation and administration of the program and supporting the growth of children, families and staff through encouragement, nurturing, education and empowerment.
CAP St. Joe Head Start and Early Head Start services 483 low-income, infant, toddler and preschool-aged children, and their families at 14 center locations and home-based services throughout Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton and DeKalb counties.
Head Start makes an immense contribution to the local community: since 1965, more than 5,500 children have entered school ready to achieve academic success and thousands of families have become self-reliant. More than 11,000 children have benefited from the program from birth to age 5 since the program began at CAP St. Joe.
CAP St. Joe receives approximately $3 million from the federal government to manage the Head Start program within the four-county area. Federal regulations require CAP St. Joe Head Start to match 25 percent of this amount, approximately $750,000, from donations and other support from the local community.
All services to children and families are provided at no cost to them. Families qualify by meeting the federal poverty guidelines. For example, a family of four must demonstrate that their annual income is less than $23,050.
