The Child Development Lab is an early childhood education program in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations (CDFR) at East Carolina University (ECU). The goals of the CDL are to serve as a model training laboratory for students majoring in child development and birth through kindergarten (BK) teacher education; to provide inclusive early education and quality care for infants, toddlers, and preschool children; and to provide research opportunities for students and faculty. The ECU CDL is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and maintains a five-star rated childcare license from the Division of Child Development, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
The ECU CDL provides high quality childcare and education for children ages three months to five years old, which represents a broad cultural and educational mixture of families within the university community and neighboring communities. In addition, the CDL is a Developmental Day Center which provides services to children with disabilities. As a model-training site, the CDL provides observation and participation opportunities and supervised internships for undergraduate and graduate students in CDFR. CDFR faculty and the CDL staff cooperatively supervise student volunteers and interns. Community and regional childcare providers are welcome to observe and consult with the faculty. We encourage you to become involved in CDL activities and to become advocates for young children.
