Child Development Center Description
The After School Program is available Monday-Friday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. when school is in session. We follow the Lowell Public Schools calendar and are closed on half days and weather-related closings.
After arriving at Girls Inc. and signing in, the girls are provided with a healthy snack. Members are then allowed free time to do homework, play games, and socialize with other girls in a supervised but unstructured setting. Once all the girls have arrived, we proceed with daily announcements and structured activity sessions. Participants have the opportunity to choose activities in areas such as computers, cooking, arts and crafts, physical fitness, games, science discovery, and homework help. We also offer special classes at no extra fee as well as special guest speakers, field trips and service projects.
In addition, Girls Inc. members have the opportunity to reach out into their community through several community action initiatives. Check with us for scheduled activity dates and to pick up a permission form for any of these great programs:
- The Grandparent Program - an opportunity for girls to visit the residents of the Horn Home, River Valley House, the Community Family Adult Day Health Center, and DYouville Manor. The girls and residents become acquainted, play games, make crafts, sing, and have a great time together once or twice per week.
- Pen Pals - the girls write via e-mail to long-distance buddies in other Girls Inc. centers and to friends made at some of our Grandparent Program sites.
- Reaching Out - girls ages 10 and older are brought to various family shelters in Lowell to help run childrens activities. Visits alternate between the House of Hope and Merrimack Family Shelter once or twice per week. There, the girls facilitate activities for the children living at the shelter- giving some great experience for future babysitters and for girls who want to make a positive difference in their surrounding community.
