Pre K Description

Center Schools preschool is a reverse mainstream program. Some students with disabilities are included in the program and registration is open to typically developing preschoolers to serve as peer models. The programs include a three-year-old group and a four-year-old group. The 3s meet Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9:00-11:00. The 4s meet daily from 1:00-3:00. Students enrolled in our 3s automatically move to our four-year-old program the following school year. If the child turns 3 before January 31 of the following year, he/she is eligible for our three-year-old program. For example, a child turning 3 before January 1, 2009 is eligible for our three-year-old program in September 2008.
An ad is posted in The Litchfield County Times and Register Citizen in late May or early June inviting parents of eligible children to register for the three-year-old program. Parents must bring a copy of their child's birth certificate and immunization records to Center School Office and fill out a registration form during the week specified in the ad. The names of registered students are entered in a lottery and chosen at random. The number of openings varies from year to year and depends on staffing and the number of students with special needs. Students whose names are not chosen are automatically put on a waiting list. Parents are notified in June as to whether or not their child was chosen. Since the three-year-old students automatically move to the four-year-old program the following school year, there are not usually openings for the four-year-old group. However, students are kept on a waiting list in the event that someone moves or drops out of the program.
In addition, Center School has a Preschool Intake Team made up of the School Psychologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Preschool Special Education Teacher. If a parent has concerns about his or her childs development, the parent may contact Jan Wilson at Center School to schedule a preschool intake. At that time the parent and child visit the preschool for a play session with the team. This visit allows the team the opportunity to discuss concerns with the parent, observe the child in a play setting, provide suggestions for home, and/or make a plan for further visits. The outcome of each intake is individualized to the childs needs.
