Preschool Description

Middle Kentucky provides comprehensive services to 338 children age three to five years in Breathitt, Lee, Wolfe and Owsley County. Head Start was founded in 1965 and is based on the philosophy that all children deserve the same opportunity for a quality education.
Although certain income guidelines do apply we may have a slot for you. A child must turn three by October 1 to be enrolled unless they are pre-diagnosed with a disability.
Our Head Start curriculum is aligned with the Kentucky Early Learning Standards and the Early Learning Framework. Developmental screening and assessment instruments include the LAP Screening, Lap III Assessment, and Ages & Stages Social/Emotional Screener.
Middle Kentucky Head Start also uses the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) to monitor teacher/child interaction, classroom climate, quality of feedback, etc. From this collection and analysis of data our school readiness goals are established for individual children, classrooms and the program as a whole.
We participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and all meals are served in accordance with federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines. This institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
All Head Start centers are accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Breathitt Head Start Centers are Four Star rated through the STARs for Kids Now Initiative. Lee and Wolfe counties are currently Three Star rated.
