Dr. Maria Montessori was one of the great pioneers in the study of child development, and her studies resulted in the educational philosophy that we follow here. She was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy, graduating from the University of Rome Medical School in 1896. Early in the twentieth century she began working with a group of children in a slum area of Rome. She called her school a Children's House and began her innovative program with the belief that young children learn best in a homelike setting with materials that are hands-on and visually appealing. Her accomplishments with these children were immediate and earned her world wide acclaim. Maria Montessori believed that learning begins at birth and that the early years, being the most formative, provide the greatest window of opportunity for education.
