Prek Description

Head Start is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
All Head Start programs are operated by local non-profit organizations in almost every area of
the country. Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and
cognitive development of children through the provision of education, health, nutrition, mental
health, and social services. Children receive free medical and dental care, healthy meals and
snacks, and enjoy planned activities in a safe, developmentally-appropriate indoor and outdoor
environment. Services are also provided to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.
The CPEC Head Start provides center-based and home-based services to 493 preschool
children in seventeen sites throughout the four-county area, 11 of which are accredited by the
National Association for the Education of Young Children.
